From an early age I showed signs of an over active imagination. As a child I could sit contented for hours drawing strange worlds populated by made up creatures. My teachers wondered where it all came from. As the years passed those same teachers sat me before bowls of fruit and made me copy them. They insisted observation was more important than imagination, and taught me to stare outwards at the world, until my inner eyes had all but closed. My interest in art continued, but I was unsure of exactly what I wanted to create. It was only years later, while studying for a degree in graphic art and design, that I discovered the technique of automatic drawing used by the surrealist movement. Inspired by the thought of a more spontaneous form of expression I went back to the drawing board with an open mind. Gradually I re-awakened the childhood pleasure of drawing straight from the imagination, and felt liberated at last from the need to research or work from life. For
me, the purpose of art is to escape everyday reality, and venture
into the deeper realms of the imagination. Website: http://davidwhitlam.com
