Joan Bradley

I have always been fascinated with the landscape image and at an early age chalked pictures on the flagstones of the street in Ancoats, East Manchester where I lived in a two up, two down terraced house with my parents and my seven brothers and sisters. I saw my first real landscape when I went on holiday to Dorset for the first time and started to draw from life, a habit that has stayed with me all my life. I still get a buzz out of painting direct from the landscape wherever I happen to be. I go to Cornwall every year for two weeks painting because I love it, but I also love painting in and around Stockport and Manchester, especially where there are crowds of people.

On leaving school at sixteen and working in various jobs I studied art at night school, gained 'O' and 'A' level qualifications and, after working in a stockbrokers for 10 years, gained a full-time place at Manchester Polytechnic to do a B.A. Hons from 1976 to 80.

In 1982 I accompanied my husband to Hong Kong where I began to paint the streets of this busy city and its people and put on three major exhibitions, an exhibition with three other women artists in the Queens Road Gallery, Central District Hong Kong and two one man shows at the Hong Kong Arts Centre Wanchai. Whilst in Hong Kong I took the opportunity to travel extensively through China, Thailand and the Phillipines as well as the Seychelles, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Raratonga, Tahiti and across the United States, returning home to Manchester in 1985.

Since then I have worked as a part time lecturer for Manchester Adult Education Services, private tutor and demonstrator locally and as Hon. Secretary and finally Chairman for the Stockport Art Guild. In 1991 I sat on the adjudication panel for the Stockport Open Exhibition.

In 1992 I was chosen the North West Winner of the Laing painting competition.

I have work in private collections in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Luxembourg, Germany and the United States.

In 2000 I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
